Sea lions and seals are noisy, curious and incredibly entertaining to watch in their natural homes. They bark, swim around boats and lounge on beaches like they own the place. These three destinations give you very different but equally rewarding experiences.

How to get there

In California the best spots are along the Central Coast, especially Pier 39 in San Francisco and La Jolla near San Diego. Most international visitors fly into Los Angeles or San Francisco airports. From there renting a car is the easiest way to move between viewing points.

The Galápagos Islands are more remote. You need to fly to Quito or Guayaquil in Ecuador first, then take a domestic flight to the islands. Once there local boats and guided tours take care of the rest.

For South Africa, Cape Town International Airport is the main gateway. It has good connections from Europe and other continents. From the airport you can reach the seal colonies around Hout Bay and the Cape region by rental car or taxi quite quickly.

What to do if weather cancels the trip

Weather can sometimes spoil boat trips especially around the Galápagos and South Africa where winds and waves rise fast. If your tour is cancelled most operators will let you reschedule for another day or give a refund. Its smart to keep one or two extra days in your itinerary just in case.

If your international flight gets delayed try to contact the airline as soon as possible. Many carriers are flexible on these routes and can rebook you without big extra costs. While waiting you can explore local markets, enjoy fresh seafood or visit nearby attractions. Good travel insurance makes these situations much less stressful.

The most important thing is to stay relaxed about the weather. These animals live here year round so even if one day doesnt work out you will still have great chances the next day. Plan with some flexibility and your trip to see sea lions and seals will be really memorable.
